JUVENILE OFFENDERS

The Joseph J. Peters Institute treats children and adolescents with broadly defined sexual behavior problems, ranging from victimless paraphilias to predatory sexual assault. Clients are referred by the juvenile justice system or through social service agencies.

The treatment process involves an intake assessment which includes a comprehensive clinical interview with the youth and his/her caregivers. Emphasis is placed on obtaining a comprehensive sexual history, assessing sexual attitudes, and analysis of the referral offense or behaviors. An array of psychological measures addressing psychological and sexual functioning is administered.

Various treatment modalities are utilized in the program. These include Individual therapy, cognitive-behavioral group therapy, family therapy, relapse prevention, and psychoeducational modules.

ADULT OFFENDERS
The Institute provides therapy for adult male and female offenders. Clients include those charged with or convicted of sexual offenses as well as those referred for problems related to sexual behavior by other social service agencies. Individuals self-referred for sexually abusive behaviors who manifest a clear evidence of internal motivation for treatment are also accepted for treatment. The vast majority of clients are referred by State or Federal probation or parole agencies and the Department of Corrections.
